Downloading high-definition films and other content will pose a serious threat to the Blu-ray disc as the next-generation technology to replace DVDs, according to market researchers iSuppli and Gartner. They said that physical distribution of media may become obsolete because of the ease of buying content through such services as iTunes and Amazon.com
It’s official: Toshiba exit to end HD format war
February 28, 2008 — yavsnewsToshiba has decided to withdraw from the high-definition disc market, effectively ending a format war the company had been waging against rival Sony’s Blu-ray technology. “This was a very difficult decision to make … but when we thought about the trouble we would cause to consumers and our partners, we decided it was not right for us to keep going with such a small presence,” Toshiba Chief Executive Officer Atsutoshi Nishida said.
LCDs gain as HDTV sales rise 27% in December

The research firm said LCDs should continue to gain market share this year as new, larger-capacity models permeate the marketplace.
